Caribbean Anoline Lizards
There are about 340 species of Anolis lizards, distributed throughout
the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. The Caribbean
species comprise 138 of the species. Remarkably similar species
have arisen independently on each of the Greater Antilles (Cuba,
Hispaniola, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico.) The two lizards shown here
have close relatives that look completely different- these lizards
are from Hispaniola (left-Anolis insolitus) and Jamaica (right-Anolis valencienni)
